Why Study Industrial Organizational Psychology

Whether you are looking to join the workforce at the master's level or advance towards a doctoral degree, our MSIO program provides a rigorous, quality education with the flexibility of a fully online format at an affordable rate. Our program's flexibility (in terms of asynchronous format & coursework pacing), preparation for M.S.-practitioner work or doctoral study, thesis or comprehensive exam options, and emphasis on interaction with program peers and faculty are all features that set our fully online program apart from others.

Potential students should have a demonstrable interest and/or experience in human behavior and business. Although most of our students completed their bachelor's degrees as psyc or business majors, we have many students from other majors as well. We also have a large number of students in our program who are returning to school after considerable time in the workforce or as part of a shift in
educational/professional focus. We are happy to work with prospective students to determine if the field of I-O Psyc and our program is the right fit for their goals.

Industrial-Organizational Psychology applies the science of psychology to the workplace. The need for I-O Psychology continues to grow as organizations seek evidence-based practices in hiring, training, and retaining a diverse, high-quality workforce. Jobs in I-O Psychology can be found in every sector of the labor market- including fortune 500 companies, factories, sports teams, universities, and volunteer efforts, just to name a few. According to US News 2022 Best Jobs Rankings, I-O Psychologists ranked #3 in Best Science Jobs #23 in Best STEM Jobs #67 in 100 Best Jobs

We have three full-time and three part-time faculty leading and contributing to our students' coursework, research, and applied experiences. We all completed our doctoral training (PhDs) in I-O Psychology, Organizational Behavior, or Organizational Leadership/Development programs. Our MSIO program follows a scientist-practitioner model and as such, our faculty are scientists and practitioners with active research
programs and/or consulting work. Examples of our varied areas of study/activity include work-nonwork interaction, intercultural competencies, gamification, veteran and active military support, and mindfulness interventions. Most of our faculty are also very actively involved with the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP, Division 14 of APA).

Derrick Tims

Psychology major

Tims’ courses in Austin Peay’s Department of Psychological Science and Counseling have worked together to show him the path to his future. One early course in career development in psychology, Tims said, helped him find what degrees he would need to work as a career counselor, while an intro to clinical counseling class helped prepare him for life in the field.

“Both of those courses are examples of how (Austin Peay) has helped me feel more confident in my ability to find the right position after the completion of my master’s degree,” he said.
